How Does Botox Work?

Botox, derived from botulinum toxin A, functions by interrupting nerve signals to muscles, resulting in temporary paralysis. Administered through injections into the muscles, one may start noticing results as soon as 2 days later, with full effects manifesting within 14 days. The duration of these effects, typically lasting from 2-4 months, depends on several factors such as individual metabolism, muscle activity, the number of units used, the age and sex of the patient, history of previous treatments, strength of muscles, and other variables.

INJECTABLES FAQ

Do injectables hurt?

It is important to understand that there are several factors impacting the level of discomfort experienced when receiving injectables. Generally speaking, however, most patients find that the injections do not cause significant pain. The smallest gauge of needle (similar to an Insulin injection) is used for injectables. The majority of people report a mild stinging sensation during injection, but this usually fades quickly. Due to the vascularity and nerve branches within the lips, this area tends to be more sensitive than other areas of the face.

How do I prepare for treatment?

To prepare yourself optimally for an injectable procedure and minimize discomfort, bleeding, bruising, and to ensure the best possible outcomes, follow these guidelines:

One week prior to treatment:

  • Avoid any other skin procedures or treatments such as lasers, facials, waxing/sugaring, chemical peels, microneedling, or microdermabrasion in the area where you'll receive the injectable. These treatments can cause skin reactions, redness, or swelling, which may interfere with the injectable procedure.

48 hours before treatment:

  • Refrain from taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood and increase bleeding and bruising, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Celebrex, Aleve, Omega-3 supplements, green tea, Gingko Biloba, St. John’s Wort, turmeric, garlic, and Vitamin E. However, do not stop any medications prescribed by your healthcare provider for the treatment of a medical condition without their authorization. Always consult your provider before discontinuing any prescribed medications.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol.

  • If you are prone to cold sores and undergoing a lip injection, discuss with your primary healthcare provider whether starting antiviral medications two days before or on the morning of the procedure is advisable.

Additionally:

  • Ensure you have no significant events scheduled for two weeks following the injectable procedure to allow any bruising or swelling to resolve and ensure optimal results.

  • Avoid scheduling any dental work, including cleanings, for two weeks after lower face treatment with dermal fillers, as manipulation of the lower face during dental procedures can affect the settling and integration of the filler into the skin.

Post-treatment instructions

  • Stay upright for 4 hours. Do not bend over or lay down.

  • Redness/swelling is normal for a few hours to days.

  • Do not touch, rub, or massage the treated area.

  • Exercise the injected muscle by making facial expressions in that area once every 15 minutes for approximately one hour.

  • Gently clean the area twice daily with mild soap. Aloe gel can also be used. Do not rub the face
during the first 4 hours after injection.

  • Avoid chemical soaps, lotions or irritants (glycolic acids, retinoids, etc.) until all redness/swelling resolves.

  • You may apply cool compresses/ice for 15 minutes per hour for comfort.

  • Make-up may be used as long as skin is not broken or irritated. It is advisable to wait 4 hours.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 4 hours after treatment.

  • Do not use hot tubs, steam rooms or saunas for 4 hours after your treatment. Excess heat can
increase your blood pressure and increase the risk of temporary bruising.

  • Noticeable results tend to begin after approximately 2-3 days of treatment with Dysport and 7-9 days after Botox, peaking at around 2 weeks. A follow-up appointment is
encouraged at 2 weeks to allow for an assessment of the treatment effect. If more product is
desired, additional fees will be required at that time.

  • Results vary, lasting between 2 and 4 months. The average tends to be closer to 3 months.

  • Return for your next appointment as soon as you begin to notice movement in the treated area. (More injections will NOT be given between 2 weeks and 3 months after the initial treatment).

  • Contact your nurse injector immediately if you have any questions, concerns, or signs of infection, blistering, scarring or other complications as previously discussed and outlined in detail in the consent form.

Contraindications for neruomodulators

Contraindications for neuromodulators are factors that may make a person unsuitable for treatment or increase the risk of adverse effects. Common contraindications include:

  1. Allergy or sensitivity: Individuals with known allergies to botulinum toxin or any of the components in the neuromodulator formulation (human albumin, lactose monohydrate or cow’s milk protein) should avoid treatment.

  2. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: While there is limited research on the safety of neuromodulators during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is generally recommended to avoid treatment during these times due to potential risks to the fetus or infant.

  3. Neurological disorders: Patients with certain neurological disorders, including but not limited to Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lambert Eaton Syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Parkinson’s disease, may be at increased risk of adverse effects from neuromodulator treatment.

  4. Muscle or nerve disorders: Individuals with muscle or nerve disorders affecting the targeted treatment area may experience increased sensitivity or adverse effects from neuromodulator injections.

  5. Infection at the injection site: Neuromodulator injections should not be administered in areas affected by active infections, as this can worsen the condition or lead to complications.

  6. Blood-thinning medications: Patients taking blood-thinning medications or supplements, including aminoglycosides, nerve blockers (anticholinesterases, succinylcholine), lincosamides, polymyxins, quinidine or magnesium sulfate, may be at increased risk of bruising or bleeding at the injection site.

  7. Previous adverse reactions: Patients who have experienced severe adverse reactions to neuromodulator injections in the past should discuss their concerns with their healthcare provider before undergoing further treatment.

It's important to consult with a qualified healthcare provider before undergoing dermal filler treatment to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for your individual circumstances. They will consider your medical history and any potential contraindications before proceeding with treatment.
